The Lab @ Silver Eye is happy to announce that we now offer photography workshops.  We're starting things off with our Summer 2018 Workshop series designed for individuals of all skill levels.  If you're interested in using the lab, are new to photography, or need a crash-course on using tools and equipment, we highly recommend signing up for one of the following courses. 


How To Do Everything @ the Lab

How To Do Everything @ The Lab - Beginner to Intermediate Level
Class Size: 6-10
Saturday, July 21st: 12-3
Workshop: $25 / $75 for Non-members


This 3-hour workshop is intended for those interested in lab membership and current members who need a refresher on lab procedures and equipment. This workshop will contain a brief overview of a common digital lab workflow from start to finish. We will cover the basics of using the lab’s equipment including: scanning with an Epson V850 for making contact sheets and work prints, Flextight Scanning to produce high resolution files for final prints, printing with the Epson P7000 24” Inkjet printer, and briefly discuss framing and print finishing options. This workshop is held quarterly and will be updated with new information as the lab evolves.

Please note that this workshop is intended as a brief introduction, and each subject will be expanded on in-depth in ether future workshops or in 1-on-1 tutoring sessions.  See the bottom of this page or email for more information.

Flash Fundamentals

Flash Fundamentals - Beginner to Intermediate Level
Instructor: Ross Mantle

This course will demonstrate how to read light in the outside world, when to use flash, and how to operate portable flash units. We will discuss the different types of lighting equipment available, with emphasis on how to use a flash in everyday scenarios and make it look natural.

Please note that students must provide their own DSLR camera and external flash unit.

Film Scanning - Beginner to Intermediate Level
Class size: 6-8 students.  
Saturday August 11: 12PM - 3PM
$40 for members, $75 for non-members

Learn to make scans that capture all the grain, beauty, and character of film photography. This hands-on workshop will explain how to utilize the Hasselblad Flextight X1 virtual drum scanner to create hi-resolution files with optimal tonal range and sharpness. Students are encouraged to bring negatives or positive film (formats 35mm up to 4”x5”) to scan. This workshop will include an overview for processing raw scans in FlexColor software, and how to import these files into Photoshop and why.  Members interested in gaining DIY access to the Flextight are encouraged to take this workshop.

The Print: Large Format Printing

The Print: Large Format Printing - Intermediate Level
Members: $125 + $100 Materials Fee; Non-Members:$175 + $100 Materials Fee
Class size: 6-10 students. 
Saturday August 25: 12PM - 5PM

This 5-hour intensive workshop will expand on the introductory workshop and will cover the controls and overall functionality of the Epson P7000 24” and 9900 44” printers and Adobe Photoshop CC to get the most out of your digital files. Students are encouraged to bring a high resolution image they would like to print. We’ll discuss how to determine best practice for achieving exhibition-ready prints including sharpening, printer profiles, and paper choices. Material fees includes proofing of two large format prints.

Framing The Print

Framing The Print - Beginner

Members: $125 + $75 Materials Fee; Non-Members $175 + $75 Materials Fee
Class size: 6-10 students. 
Saturday, September 15: 12PM - 5PM

This workshop is concerned with one of the most challenging and critical steps in preparing your photography for exhibit. This hands-on course will demystify the frame, and will discuss different methods of archival presentation including matting vs. mounting, glass vs. plexi, as well as how to hang your artwork. Students are encouraged to bring one 16”x20” or smaller print to be framed.

The Lab @ Silver offers private tutoring in a wide range of photography topics for all experience levels. Unlike the traditional workshops, tutoring lets you learn about photography one-to-one with talented, experienced teaching artists. Work on your projects, learn what you want, when you want. Tutoring sessions are $50 per hour.
