Workshop
With an Eternal Wing
Lifting a line from gender-bending surrealist artist Claude Cahun, With an Eternal Wing with lee rae walsh encourages participants to consider research as an embodied part of artistic practice, asking: if it is not embodied, how can it be shared? Our time together will include encounters with art historical figures who blur the mediums of writing, performance and photography, with a focus on queer narratives/storytelling. Through performative lectures, individual and collective study, readings and prompts -- we will build a collective bibliography, our own canon. Participants will be invited to invent or borrow from these demonstrated methodologies to share their own traces of ‘embodied research’ in class. 1:1 individual breakout sessions will be used to support the choosing of their own guide and exploration of what form (material, ephemeral, or otherwise) the sharing of this work may take. Ideally, students will leave with a deeper relationship to their voice, the stories they desire to share, and a sense of how these stories are situated within history – along with tools for continued work and study within this practice.
