Looking for Things from the Hillsides with Sean Carroll

This is a 3-week workshop that meets weekly on Saturday afternoons, from October 25 - November 22, 2025. Participants must provide their own transportation to the three different meeting points.

Week 1: Frick Park (meet at Lower Frick Parking Area) Saturday 10/25, 2-4pm

Week 2: Rachel Carson Trail (meet at Harrison Hills Park) Saturday 11/8, 2-4pm

Week 3: Garfield and Share Back (meet at Lab at Silver Eye Education Center) Saturday 11/22, 2-5pm

Walking among Pittsburgh’s famous hills presents a visual paradise for any photographer. This region’s landscapes are ripe for exploration and creativity. The verdant hills and sweeping views complement rugged trails cut through steep valleys and city steps that ascend hillsides to tidy neighborhoods above. Flora and fauna abound as the landscape shifts and changes at the crest of each hill and around every bend. The natural and human-made worlds live in harmony in a classic struggle with encroaching urban life and suburban development.

This exploratory series of workshop walks invites participants to go for a hike with their cameras. Amidst Pittsburgh’s unique hillsides we will explore our surroundings looking for stories hidden within, with a goal of making new photographs. Each walk in the series will encompass a moderate 3-5 mile hike, instruction with strategies for photography, individual assistance as needed, and a related reading and inspirational projects for discussion during the hike. Each meeting is self-contained, so participants can choose to attend any number of sessions, or attend the whole series, though the workshop is offered only with the full registration fee. The last meeting starts with a short urban hike from the Lab at Silver Eye in Garfield, followed a share-back and discussion of images made during the three sessions.

Skill Level: This workshop is for photographers of any skill level. Participants should have equipment to make and process their own pictures. Images wiil be shared in the third week either digitally or as prints. The workshop does not include printing. And processing materials are not provided.

A limited number of fee waivers are available for those who otherwise would not be able to participate. Please contact leo@silvereye.org to request a fee waiver.
