Capture the Action: Photographing Sports

Three Session Workshop: Tuesday, June 24, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.; Wednesday, June 25, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.; and Saturday, June 28, 10:00 a.m. – noon.

Join Silver Eye for this workshop to learn the ins and outs of capturing sports action.  Greg Ellis, sports photographer for the University of West Virginia, will lead these three sessions filled with tips and tricks of the trade. From learning what equipment to bring to an event to a practice shoot at the racing oval, you will be ready to capture the finish at the Tour of Pennsylvania on the South Side on Saturday, June 28. Members and students $75.00; Non-members $90.00. Reservations required. Class limited to 10.

Uncovering Pittsburgh’s Botanical Treasures

Wednesday, July 2, 7:00 p.m.

Join Jamie Shriver, assistant archivist at Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation, to explore the history of Pittsburgh’s 19th-century gardens. She will be showing us historical photography from the days of magic lantern presentations. Program takes place at Silver Eye. Members and students $10.00; Non-members $15.00. Refreshments will be served. Reservation recommended.

Exhibiting Photographers Speak

Thursday, July 17, 6:30 p.m. and Thursday, August 21, 6:30 p.m.

Join contributing photographers from 250 Years of Plants: Botanical Works by Regional Photographers for a discussion of their experiences and inspirations for these photographs. We will feature different photographers for each of these two programs. Members and students free; Non members $5.00. Reservations recommended.

Phipps Photographic Safari with Dan Mohan

Sunday, July 20, 10:00 a.m. – Noon

Exhibiting photographer Dan Mohan leads us on a safari through Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens to get up close and personal with the flowers. Summer Point of View Workshop

Friday, July 25 and Saturday, July 26, 9:00 a.m. noon

Sherrie Flick, artistic director of the Gist Street Reading Series leads this two session writiing workshop with exhibition photographs as inspiration. This workshop is open to the public but primarily focuses on writing skills and excercises for classroom teachers. Class size is limited.

Wild Flower Count with Cameras

Saturday, August 2, 9:00 a.m. – Noon

Work with botanist Christopher Heckel on this unique opportunity to examine the diversity of wildflowers at Trillium Trail in Fox Chapel. Bring your camera along and practice your macro photography skills under the guidance of photographer Pam Heckel. Members and students, $25.00; Non-members, $30.00. Photography at Hunt Institute

Wednesday, August 6, 7:00 p.m.

Archivist Angela Todd and librarian Charlotte Tancin will discuss the role of photography in the work of Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation, with examples from the collections selected especially for Silver Eye. This will include daguerreotypes, photographs from the field, and photography in botanical art and illustration. This program takes place at Hunt Institute on the campus of Carnegie Mellon University, 4909 Frew Street, Hunt Library, 5th Floor. Admission free. Reservation recommended. Intermediate Digital Camera Workshop
Saturday, August 16, 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

Kick it up a notch! Moving beyond the white balance, photographer and teacher Pam Heckel will show you how to get the most out of your digital camera. Topics covered will include depth of field, aperture priority, image quality, raw and compressed files, custom white balance, and histograms. Members and students, $25.00; Non-members, $30.00. Reservations required. Class limited to 10.

Hands on: Photoshop Elements Program

Wednesday, September 10, 6:30 – 9:00 p.m.

Work in a small group setting to learn the newest version of Adobe Photoshop Elements 6 with instructor Sally Bozzuto. Members and students $45.00; Non-members $55.00. Reservations required. Class limited to 5.
